I was first introduced to the skincare brand Goodal and their Green Tangerine products way back in 2017, when Club Clio first opened its first shop in Manila. Their products have greatly improved since then, and have now become consistent best-sellers in Korea.
As a quick re-introduction, Goodal is a Korean clean beauty brand under Clio Cosmetics that takes a minimalistic approach to skincare, harnessing the power of natural ingredients in its simple yet potent solutions for clinically proven results.
Green Tangerine Vita C Dark Spot Care Serum *
A serum containing 70% Jeju green tangerine extract and 4% niacinamide that claims to effectively remove dark spots and bring back vitality to the skin in as little as two weeks. It has a very lightweight gel texture that gets absorbed into the skin almost instantly. There's a refreshing citrus scent that's not too strong (but personally I think it could have done without it). It's dermatologically tested to be hypoallergenic, but it does contain a few essential oils, so I would advise caution when using it on super sensitive or damaged skin. One important thing to note tho is that the Green Tangerine Vita C line does not contain pure Vitamin C, so the effects are going to be very different vs using pure Vitamin C serums. Its main ingredient is green tangerine extract, but it uses niacinamide + arbutin to help boost the brightening effect of the green tangerine. (Full ingredients list here.)
I used this for a little over the promised 2-week mark, and while I did notice my skin getting a bit brighter, but no visible improvement on dark spots. This is because it's made to be something you can use daily, so it's very gentle. Rather than 2 weeks, maybe a month would be more realistic, especially for older spots. Sadly I never got to see if it would make my dark spots go away completely or not; I passed this on to a friend after a while because I had a lot of other brightening/spot care products I liked more.
Green Tangerine Vita C Dark Spot Care Sun Serum *
An all-in-one Sun Serum that acts as a daily sunscreen, moisturizer, and spot care serum. Containing 2.7% Jeju green tangerine extract and 2% niacinamide, it claims to improve the appearance of dark spots and freckles after 4 weeks of use. The formulation is quite interesting—it uses a new concept of keeping oil-soluble ingredients such as UV filters and active ingredients within little solid capsules. These miniscule capsules are then blended with the water-soluble ingredients formulated in the serum itself, which makes the sun serum blends beautifully into the skin. It's a surfactant-free, irritation-free formula that leaves the skin with a transparent finish and no white cast.Out of the sunscreens I tried in 2022, this was one of my favorites in terms of texture and finish. It's especially good with makeup, since it minimizes the steps needed for skincare as an all-in-one serum/moisturizer/sunscreen. Unforunately though I had to stop using it because of the fragrance. It's so strong! It's a very strong neroli scent. Strong fragrances trigger my rhinitis so scented skincare is just a no for me unless it's very mild. It does go away after a while, but why add essential oils just for fragrance in the first place? I don't get it.
That's it for these two. My first impressions of these two weren't very good, and tbh while they're both solid products, I'm still very hesitant to recommend them because of the essential oils in both products. Personally my skin isn't sensitive to essential oils, but I prefer to avoid them because of my sensitivity to fragrance, and to minimize any other possible reactions.
UPDATE 01/04/2025: Chai from the future here—updating this to say that I became curious about the Vita C Dark Spot Care Serum again when I found out that it won 1st Place for Best Serums/Essences at the Olive Young Awards 2024. It also continues to have a high rating on Hwahae, which leads me to believe that I just didn't give it enough time. I'll definitely give it another go when I get the chance to try it again, if only to see if I really did miss out on a good thing!
